WHAT KIND OF WATER HEATER IS RIGHT FOR YOU?
Conventional water heaters (or storage water heaters) store a reservoir of water in tanks of up to 100 gallons. When you turn on a hot water tap, the water heater releases hot water to meet your demands. As the tank begins to empty, cold water immediately fills it, and a burner under the tank heats the water, firing on and off to keep the water warm until you need it. Conventional water heaters can be powered by natural gas, propane, fuel oil or electricity.
A tankless water heater, on the other hand, has no water storage tank. When you turn on a hot water tap, cold water travels through a pipe into the unit and is heated by either a gas burner or an electric element. It will deliver a constant supply of hot water at a rate of about 2–5 gallons per minute, so you won’t need to wait for hot water to fill a conventional water heater tank.
Tankless water heaters tend to last longer and are usually more energy efficient than conventional models because they heat water only when it is needed instead of running continuously.
However, even the largest models may not be able to keep up with the hot water demands of a large household and may be stretched to their limits when family members are taking showers and doing laundry at the same time. To overcome the problem, some homeowners install separate tankless water heaters for appliances that use lots of hot water or install two or more of them connected together.
The upfront cost of a tankless water heater is typically more than a conventional water heater, but tankless water heaters usually last longer (up to 20 years) and have lower operating and energy costs. In contrast, conventional water heaters have a lifespan of about 10 to 15 years.
