If you are planning to replace or upgrade your furnace, there are many efficient options that can meet your budget and comfort needs. Advanced Comfort Specialists would be happy to provide you with recommendations that fit your home. Our answers to the following frequently asked questions may also help.

  1. When should I replace my current furnace?

Consider replacing your current system if:

  • Your furnace or boiler is more than 15 years old
  • Certain parts of your home are too hot or too cold
  • The air in your home feels stuffy or stale
  • Your home has started to have humidity problems
  • Your heating system makes a lot of noise
  • Your system needs frequent repairs
  • Your energy bills are increasing while usage stays the same
  1. Which furnace will best fit my home?

Many factors will affect the size and design of your heating system, such as square footage, insulation, amount of window surface and configuration, duct size and configuration, and so on. Contact Advanced Comfort Specialists for an analysis to determine which equipment would be ideally suited to your home, your budget, and your family’s comfort needs.

  1. What is the life expectancy of a furnace?

Although furnaces contain many components, each with its own maintenance requirements and lifespan, the heat exchanger is the main component that defines a furnace. In older furnaces, life expectancy was about 15 years, or 20 years if well-maintained. Today’s new furnaces work smarter and have more durably designed components. You can expect them to operate reliably for up to 30 years.

  1. What is an AFUE rating?

Furnaces are ranked based on their AFUE (annual fuel utilization efficiency) ratings, which assess their efficiency. If you have an old furnace, its original rating may have been 60% to 70% AFUE, and it may have become less efficient over the years. Today’s regulations require furnaces to have a minimum rating of 80% AFUE. Replacing your old furnace would improve efficiency by at least 10% to 20%. There are also high-efficiency furnaces that reach 90% efficiency and ultra high-efficiency options that achieve up to 97% efficiency.

  1. Does my furnace need regular (or preventive) maintenance?

Your furnace will work hard to keep your home warm and cozy. Failing to maintain it properly can reduce its efficiency and shorten its lifespan. Inspections on boiler and furnace systems should include heat exchangers, filters, ductwork, vents, burners, blowers, drainage systems, fuel lines, wiring, pumps, and every part of the equipment. Newer furnaces can be checked every other year, but once they’re more than 10 years old, they should be checked annually to prevent possible problems.
