FOUR MISCONCEPTIONS ABOUT AIR CONDITIONING SYSTEMS
Many people take air conditioning for granted and have ideas about A/C systems that are actually not true. Here are three of the most common:
- The bigger the unit, the better the results. Size does matter, but it’s not as simple as just getting a bigger air conditioner. An air conditioning system should be properly sized to fit your home or business because, in addition to cooling, it must remove humidity from the air. This is important because humid air feels hotter and less comfortable than dryer air. Let Advanced Comfort Specialists ensure your A/C is working properly before you invest in a bigger unit.
- Air conditioning is bad for your health. Can air conditioned air give you a cold or make you more vulnerable to respiratory problems? There has never been any proof of this. In fact, air conditioning may help people with seasonal allergies because it lowers the indoor humidity and reduces your exposure to outdoor allergens.
- The lower you set the thermostat, the faster it will cool. Your home won’t cool down faster; the A/C will simply stay on longer and cost more to run. Just like your furnace, the air conditioning system is designed to cool air at the same rate regardless of the setting on the thermostat. Instead of wasting energy, have the system serviced or repaired so that it will keep you comfortable.
- Maintenance is a waste of time. Again, not true. It’s important to have a professional perform regular maintenance on your air conditioner. This will keep it from becoming a home for mold, mildew and bacteria. There’s also a difference of up to 5% efficiency between a dirty filter and a clean one, and a dirty filter can damage the coils and cause the system to be less efficient. Regular maintenance is always less costly than a repair.
