Your water heater is a very important part of your plumbing system and is responsible for approximately 15% of your energy usage. Of course, you may not give it much thought until you jump into a lukewarm shower first thing in the morning or have to wash your laundry in cold water. If you think you may need a new water heater, you’ll have a couple of options to consider.
CONVENTIONAL TANK WATER HEATERS
Conventional water heaters hold a reservoir of water inside a tank. Gas or electric energy heats the water, keeping it hot until you need it. These water heaters are available in a variety of gallon capacities and should last an average of 10 to 12 years.
Size: Bigger is not always better. A water heater that’s too big will cost more by heating water than you’ll ever use, but one that’s too small won’t deliver enough hot water to meet the demands of your home and family.
Every water heater has a first hour rating (FHR), which will help determine the ideal size for your home or business. There are different ways to calculate the FHR but, typically, a 30-gallon water heater will serve one to two people, a 40-gallon tank will serve two to three people, a 40- to 50-gallon tank will serve three to four people, and a 50- to 80-gallon water heater is ideal for five or more people.
Efficiency: Gas water heaters generally cost about 50% less to operate than electric water heaters, but fuel costs and the efficiency of the unit will affect your savings. Newer water heaters are more energy efficient than older models. Those that vent into a chimney provide about 80% efficiency. Those that vent directly to the outside are about 92% efficient.
TANKLESS WATER HEATERS
Tankless water heaters heat the water only when it’s needed. When a faucet is turned on, they go to work, producing a continuous supply of hot water. The typical tankless water heater should last about 15 to 20 years.
Size: Unlike conventional tank water heaters, the capacity of tankless water heaters is not measured in gallons. Instead, your Advanced Comfort Specialists technician will calculate and add together the flow rates of any water appliances in your home that you expect to use simultaneously. Some models have a maximum flow rate of 3.5 gallons, which is enough for a shower and sink faucet.
Efficiency: Because they don’t need to continuously heat water in a tank, tankless water heaters are considered to be about 96% efficient and may be able to dramatically reduce your water heating bills. Where you place it can also affect how efficient it is to use.
In many cases, it can be installed on the wall where the old water heater was located and where there are already gas and water pipes in place. However, larger gas lines, special venting or extra electric circuits may need to be installed to meet the tankless water heater’s demand.
