5 Common Causes of HVAC System Breakdowns

With complex equipment like boilers, furnaces, heat pump systems, and a/c units, it’s no secret that they might require a repair, tune-up, or even a replacement through their lifespan. What’s surprising, especially to our clients in Lancaster County, is that there are preventative measures and observations you can make that could reduce the number of times your system is compromised. Below is a list of what we consider to be the 5 most common causes of breakdowns.

Clogged Filters

A clogged air filter is arguably the most common issue. Clogged filters are caused by dirt, dust, pet hair, and pathogens that build up over time and cause the system to work overtime until it breaks down. Not changing the filter or using the wrong type of filter for your HVAC system can cause it to become clogged more frequently.

Thermostat Malfunction

The thermostat controls the temperature of the air in an HVAC system and when it malfunctions, it can cause your system to continuously run until it breaks down. Servicing it regularly and even replacing the unit, which should be done by a professional, can drastically improve the thermostat’s performance.

Leaking Refrigerant

Refrigerant is the liquid used in air conditioning units that allow the system to run smoothly and efficiently. If you discover leaks or ice on your ac unit, check all the hookups and hoses for a possible leak and if none is found, check that the refrigerant levels aren’t just too low.

Blower Motor Malfunction

The blower motor is the part of the HVAC system that is responsible for pushing the temperature-controlled air through the ducts and vents to the rest of the property. Calling a technician and having them determine and fix the issue is the best way to resolve the problem quickly, while also remembering to keep the blower motor free of any debris or obstacles that could block the flow of air in the system.

Lack of routine maintenance

It should be no surprise that a lack of proper and routine maintenance on an HVAC system can lead to issues later on down the road. Just like a car, an HVAC system needs regularly scheduled maintenance to run at maximum efficiency at all times.

Scheduling regular maintenance with one of our fantastic ACS technicians is a perfect and easy solution to confirm that the issues you suspected are indeed the cause of the problem. The best solution, however, is to be proactive about your HVAC system and not wait until a problem arises to call a technician.
