When Should You Clean Your Air Vents and Ducts

After ringing in the new year with your loved ones, you find yourself putting your affairs in order and reorganizing your priorities to make room for a new years resolution or two.

Before you commit to a resolution you will ultimately forget about in 2 months, consider some less drastic but more than necessary resolutions to jump-start you in the right direction. Something as simple as cleaning your air vents when you dust and clean the rest of your house can bring so much back to your air quality.

How often?

Our experts recommend that you clean out your ducts and vents every 2 to 3 years to prevent the buildup of dust and debris. Other factors could change that timetable of 2 to 3 years, such as small children and some pets. Families and homes with pets that tend to shed their hair and skin will increase the rate at which your vents collect debris, causing you to have to get them cleaned more often. Small children will have you clean your vents regularly to keep them healthy, not because they create a mess in the vents and ducts. They can and will be more susceptible to airborne irritants like dust, so opting to clean out your ducts once a year, or more if needed, can help to keep you and your family happy and healthy for as long as possible.

If I don’t, what happens?

If you decide that duct and vent cleaning is just a waste of time and money, what will happen is that dust and debris that builds up will continue until there is no more room, ultimately blocking the airflow and causing a mountain of more problems. When there is a buildup and blockage in the ducts, you might think your system is running a few degrees off, so you turn up the power and hope it provides you with the ideal temperature. The problem is you end up running your system into “overdrive,” and your energy bill skyrockets while the blockage of air strains the system and chambers, causing some to bust and need repair.
