CONVENTIONAL AND CONDENSING FURNACES

Furnaces produce heat through the combustion of natural gas or heating oil in the furnace's burner. A blower pushes air across heated coils where it is then delivered to rooms via the home’s ductwork system. The combustion gases created by burning the fuel are vented through the chimney or, with high-efficiency condensing furnaces, through a wall.

The two most common types of gas furnaces are the conventional furnace and the high-efficiency condensing furnace. Both systems will keep you warm and cozy. Both systems take in cold air return from the house and run it through an air filter. Both utilize a circulating fan to move the air and heat it with a gas burner controlled by an electronic ignition.

The primary differences are in the heat exchanger technology that extracts heat from the combustion process and in the method used to exhaust the resulting combustion gases. Condensing furnaces are more efficient because they extract more heat from the combustion process.

Conventional furnaces typically operate at higher temperatures, so some of the heat is vented to the outside during the combustion process. This means the heat exchanger is not extracting as much heat as possible from the combustion process. Depending upon its age and type, a conventional non-condensing furnace will typically achieve 80% to 85% efficiency.

Condensing furnaces operate at lower temperatures and continue extracting heat from the combustion gases even after they have cooled and condensed. This is accomplished by means of two heat exchangers instead of one. The secondary heat exchanger handles the corrosive condensed exhaust gases produced by water and carbon dioxide, harvesting their heat until condensed water drips out of the heat exchangers. The lower operating temperatures result in less energy consumption and keep more heat in the heating system.

Also, unlike conventional furnaces, the condensing furnace’s combustion air intake is vented directly from the furnace to the outside of the home. Good condensing furnaces can achieve energy efficiency of 90% or more.

Although condensing gas furnaces generally have the highest efficiency ratings, you may be looking for an efficient oil-fired furnace. Advanced Comfort Specialists has extensive experience with clean-burning oil furnaces that will provide you with plenty of warmth, excellent fuel efficiency and significant energy savings.

Regardless of which fuel you use to heat your home or business, the easiest and the most cost-effective way of reducing your heating expense is to keep your system well-tuned.
