TYPES OF CENTRAL AIR CONDITIONERS
Central air conditioners are either packaged units or split-system units. In a packaged system, the condenser, compressor and evaporator are all located in one cabinet, which is usually placed on a concrete slab next to your home’s foundation or on the roof of a small building. Ducts come from indoors through the exterior wall or roof to connect with it. Packaged units often include electric heating coils or a natural gas furnace. The combination of A/C and central heater eliminates the need for a separate indoor furnace.
In a split-system, the condenser and compressor are located in an outdoor cabinet, and an indoor cabinet holds the evaporator. In many split-system air conditioners, the indoor cabinet also contains a furnace or part of a heat pump. If you have a furnace but no A/C, a split-system can be highly efficient and the most economical unit to install. Ductless split systems use heat pump technology to distribute warm or cool air more quietly and efficiently than electric furnaces, baseboards, and wall heaters.
IS YOUR AIR CONDITIONER EFFICIENT?
If you’re buying a new air conditioner, it’s easy to get confused over the different energy efficiency ratings you’ll see listed on the equipment. It’s worth investigating them, however, because they can make a significant difference in how much your system will cost to buy and operate. Here are a few of the ratings and what they mean.
- SEER – The seasonal energy efficiency ratio (SEER) takes into consideration the cooling power of the air conditioner compared to the electrical input (cost) required to run it for an average cooling season. An air conditioner with a SEER rating of 23 will be far more efficient than a unit with a rating of 14.
- EER – Although not as common, the energy efficiency ratio (EER) is another means of measuring an air conditioner’s efficiency, It is calculated using a constant outside temperature of 95 degrees, a constant inside temperature of 80 degrees and a humidity level of 50%, and can tell you how an air conditioner will perform on mild, warm days and on hot, humid days. You may see this rating more often when comparing smaller window-mounted A/C units.
- ENERGY STAR® – This rating was formulated by the EPA. To qualify for an ENERGY STAR® rating, manufacturers must meet or exceed the EPA’s minimum efficiency ratings on their HVAC equipment. Choosing a high-efficiency ENERGY STAR rated system can help you keep your utility bills down and reduce energy costs.
Higher ratings usually mean lower operating costs, but they also mean higher price tags. And while ratings are useful, at the end of the day there are other factors to consider, such as whether the unit is the proper size for your home or building. A unit that is too large will not run as efficiently. We can help you find an appropriately sized and energy efficient air conditioner that also fits your budget.
